How Minneapolis / St Paul engagements actually work.

Every engagement starts with a real conversation about your portfolio. No automated triage, no template responses.

Most of the accounts we place for Twin Cities companies look the same on the surface: a customer who paid on time for years, then went to 60 days, then 90, then stopped returning calls. What changes the outcome is what happens next, and in Minnesota the options are more specific than most business owners realize. Conciliation court hears business claims up to $20,000 without an attorney. A written contract that names an interest rate can carry more than the 6 percent default. Construction and public-work accounts have lien and bond deadlines that run from your last day on the job, not from the invoice date. We work every account with those rules in view, so the demand letter, the negotiation, and the escalation all land on the debtor with real consequences behind them.

We are a commercial agency. We do not collect consumer, medical, or rent debt, and we do not run the call-center scripts that make a Minneapolis business owner dread hearing from a collection agency. Every file is read by a person who understands the industry it came from, whether that is a subcontractor on a Minneapolis project chain, a staffing firm carrying payroll for a client in St Paul, or a distributor in the western suburbs with a short-pay problem. Judgment, not volume, is the whole approach.

The office is at 8800 MN-7 in St Louis Park, a short drive west of downtown Minneapolis, and we meet clients in person when a file calls for it. Recovery work is on contingency: you pay a percentage of what we collect and nothing if we collect nothing. Early-stage pre-collection is a flat fee. Both start with a free review of the account.

Common questions about Minneapolis / St Paul.

Pulled straight from the conversations we have with finance leaders most weeks. If your question isn't here, reach out and we'll answer it directly.

  • Yes. RecoverMax holds Minnesota collection agency license #40996825. Minnesota requires any collection agency doing business in the state to hold a license from the Department of Commerce under Minn. Stat. 332.33, backed by a surety bond, with each individual collector registered. Ask any agency you consider for its license number before you place accounts, and check it in the Department of Commerce license lookup.

  • Minnesota conciliation court hears claims up to $20,000 and does not require a lawyer, so for a small, undisputed balance with a debtor who has assets, filing yourself can work. The catch is that a judgment is not money. You still have to find bank accounts or receivables to levy. An agency earns its fee on the accounts where the debtor is disputing, stalling, or hard to reach, and on larger balances where district court and counsel come into play. We tell clients when conciliation court is the better option.

  • Six years from the breach for most contract debt under Minn. Stat. 541.05, and four years for the sale of goods under the UCC (Minn. Stat. 336.2-725). Those are outside limits, not targets. Collectability drops sharply after 90 days regardless of the statute, which is why we ask clients to place accounts early.

  • Minnesota's default legal rate is 6 percent per year unless a different rate is agreed to in writing (Minn. Stat. 334.01). A credit application or signed terms that name a late-payment rate gives you real leverage. In construction, Minn. Stat. 337.10 adds 1.5 percent per month on undisputed amounts a contractor fails to pass down within ten days of being paid. We check your paperwork for these terms before the first demand goes out.

  • Yes. The office is in St Louis Park on Highway 7, and we meet clients across the metro when a file calls for it: reviewing a large portfolio, working through a disputed account with your controller, or sitting down with your credit team on process. Most day-to-day work happens by phone and email.

  • Construction (general contractors, subcontractors, suppliers), staffing, freight and logistics, manufacturing, and wholesale distribution, along with professional services firms. The first five each have their own page on this site explaining how recovery works in that industry, because the leverage is different in each one.
